Proper Joint Preparation
Professional masonry repointing helps restore deteriorated mortar joints while maintaining the appearance and character of existing brick, stone and fieldstone masonry. Stone Master Masonry & Chimney provides mortar joint repair and repointing solutions suited to the condition and type of the existing masonry.
When Masonry Mortar Joints Need Repointing
Mortar joints should be evaluated when they become cracked, recessed, powdery, loose or missing. Open joints can allow additional moisture into brick and stone assemblies and may leave individual masonry units less supported. Repointing restores deteriorated joint material while allowing sound brick or stone to remain in place.
Grinding, Cleaning & Preparing Mortar Joints
Durable repointing depends on preparation. Loose and deteriorated mortar is removed to expose a suitable joint, and dust and debris are cleaned away before replacement mortar is installed. Applying a thin surface layer over weak existing mortar does not provide the same repair as properly preparing the joint first.
Brick, Stone, Chimney & Fieldstone Repointing
Stone Master repoints a range of masonry found throughout New Hampshire, including brick walls, chimneys, stonework and older fieldstone foundations. The existing material, joint condition and exposure are considered when selecting the repair approach. Older masonry can require different treatment from newer construction, particularly where previous repairs or moisture deterioration are present.
Freeze-Thaw Damage to Mortar Joints
New Hampshire weather can be hard on exposed masonry. Once water enters cracked or deteriorated joints, freezing temperatures can expand retained moisture and contribute to additional joint and masonry damage. Repairing failed mortar helps close vulnerable areas before deterioration progresses further.
Masonry Repointing FAQs
Is repointing the same as covering old mortar with new mortar?
No. Repointing involves removing deteriorated joint material and installing replacement mortar into the prepared joint. A surface-only application can leave loose or failed mortar underneath.
Can only the damaged sections be repointed?
Yes, when deterioration is localized and the surrounding joints remain sound. More widespread mortar failure can require a larger repointing area so the repair addresses the actual extent of deterioration.
Can damaged bricks or stones be repaired at the same time?
Yes. If individual masonry units are loose, cracked or badly deteriorated, selective replacement or resetting can be coordinated with the repointing work.
