Repair or Complete Rebuild
Depending on the condition of the existing steps, we can repair isolated deterioration or rebuild the step system from the supporting base upward. Rebuilds may include excavation, a reinforced concrete footing, concrete block construction, reinforcement, new treads and finished masonry surfaces.
Concrete Step & Masonry Stair Inspections
Stone Master Masonry & Chimney provides inspections and condition assessments for concrete, brick, granite and masonry steps and stair systems. We check visible cracking, loose or deteriorated masonry, damaged mortar joints, settlement, movement, uneven areas, failing treads or landings and deterioration around the supporting base. Where concerns are found, we can recommend appropriate repair, reinforcement or rebuilding options.
Why Concrete & Masonry Steps Deteriorate
Exterior steps are exposed to rain, snow, ice, deicing materials and repeated freeze-thaw cycles. Water entering cracks or deteriorated mortar can expand when it freezes and gradually loosen concrete, brick, stone and mortar. Settlement beneath the supporting base can also contribute to uneven treads, separated joints and movement between the stairs and adjoining landing.
Concrete Step Crack & Surface Repair
Localized cracks and damaged concrete can sometimes be repaired without rebuilding the entire stair system. The affected area is evaluated to determine whether the surrounding concrete remains sound. Loose material is removed and the repair is prepared so new repair material can bond to a stable surface. Where cracking is associated with movement or an inadequate base, additional reinforcement or rebuilding may be recommended.
Brick Steps, Granite Treads & Masonry Landings
Stone Master repairs brick stairs, masonry sidewalls, granite treads and entrance landings. Work can include replacing deteriorated brick, repointing mortar joints, resetting loose granite, repairing supporting masonry and restoring damaged surfaces. When existing masonry has deteriorated beyond a practical repair, the affected section can be rebuilt on an appropriate supporting base.
New Hampshire Freeze-Thaw Protection
New Hampshire winters place substantial stress on exterior masonry. Keeping joints, cracks and horizontal surfaces in good condition helps reduce locations where water can enter before freezing. After applicable repairs have cured, appropriate masonry protection or sealing can be considered based on the materials and exposure of the completed work.
Concrete Steps & Masonry Stairs FAQs
Should cracked concrete steps be repaired or rebuilt?
It depends on the extent of deterioration and the condition of the supporting base. Localized damage may be repairable, while widespread cracking, settlement, movement or badly deteriorated masonry can make rebuilding the more appropriate option.
Can loose granite treads be reset?
Often, yes. The supporting masonry beneath the tread must first be inspected. If that base remains suitable or can be repaired, the granite can be reset and the surrounding joints restored.
Can damaged sidewalls be repaired along with the steps?
Yes. Step projects can include repairs to masonry sidewalls, cracked stucco, mortar joints, landings and other connected masonry so the entrance is addressed as a complete assembly.
